0543. Honours for L. Volusius Bassus Cerealis

Description: Moulded marble base (w: 0.90 x h: 1.55 x d: 0.90); 282 is cut on the reverse face .
Text: Line 1 inscribed on the upper moulding, with ivy leaves on either side, lines 2 ff. within a moulded panel (die, w: 0.28 x h: 0.53) from which a previous inscription has been erased.
Letters: Late form of Rustic capitals: line 1, 0.07; remainder, 0.03-0.05.

(scil. In honour) of Curnius. To Lucius Volusius Bassus Cerealis, of senatorial and consular status, curator of his own city, for which, along with other public works that he renewed by his industry and tremendous effort, he restored the basilica Ulpia, with its public place, to a better appearance using public money; offering their gratitude, the Lepcitanians, publicly.

Curnius! A Lucius Volusius Bassus Cerealis, uomo chiarissimo e consolare, curatore della propria repubblica, per il fatto che, tra le altre opere che rinnovò con la sua operosità e con il più grande sforzo, restituì – con pubblica spesa – un aspetto migliore alla Basilica Ulpia insieme con . . .(?), in segno di riconoscimento i Leptitani, a spese pubbliche.
